Giotto, Michelangelo, Brunelleschi, Leonardo da Vinci were not only great artists, also they were excellent craftsmen. It was thanks to their manual ability that they were able to express their genius.
In Florence this spirit, the use of the hands to create unique objects, has survived until the present day. The craftsman’s workshop has changed over the years, but it is still the very school where the tradition of hand-made objects is celebrated and passed on.
The immense artistic heritage of this city is made up of works from various disciplines: ‘high art’ such as painting, sculpture and architecture, plus the less celebrated crafts of ceramics, wood inlay, goldsmith, metal work, straw weaving, lace, leather, textiles, carpentry and the restoration of antique furniture. In Florence there is an international craft fair at the Fortezza da Basso every spring called the Mostra Mercato dell’Artigianato and in October every other year (odd years) there’s the Biennale dell’Antiquariato.
